Pere Soto holds their attention because his guitar does not sit neatly in any of the usual modern-jazz categories. They hear a jazz root, but also a sound, articulation, use of effects and almost percussive approach that mark a personality of his own — between tradition and contemporary experiment. They do not arrive at that from prior knowledge of his career: the reaction comes from listening to the record.
